Stewarding the Earth

Engage the real change makers.

Indigenous messages. Conserving and protecting nature.

  • Stewarding the Earth is back with a focus on advancing the visibility of Indigenous women’s leadership

Stewarding the Earth has returned at COP 27!

In 2023, a cohort of three emerging Indigenous women leaders women will share insights and stories to demonstrate the importance of Indigenous women and girls in environmental action – and to inspire Indigenous girls and emerging women leaders.

  • Indigenous Insights - Stewarding the Earth is a global communications campaign amplifying messages from Indigenous leaders on conservation and environmental action.

The campaign was designed in 2021 to help raise attention to The World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature (IP Summit). The IP Summit was the first of its kind, hosted within the context of IUCN’s World Conservation Congress and is a culmination of collaborative planning among IUCN’s Indigenous Peoples Organisation members (IPOs) to establish Indigenous priorities, areas of collaboration, and call upon the global community to play supportive and enabling roles by respecting and supporting Indigenous rights and leadership roles.

  • A Global Indigenous Agenda for the Governance of Indigenous Lands, Territories, Waters, Coastal Seas and Natural Resources

The development of these priorities was led by IPOs, with IUCN’s support, to build and cohere views from Indigenous Peoples from across regions though several regional forums. The result of this process was embodied in a Global Indigenous Agenda for the Governance of Indigenous Lands, Territories, Waters, Coastal Seas and Natural Resources (Global Indigenous Agenda), which was unveiled at the IP Summit.

  • A critical time to highlight Indigenous priorities

This means the months leading up to the Summit were critical for awareness raising about the Agenda. It also means the subsequent months were crucial for ensuring Indigenous priorities were presented, discussed and adopted by intrenational policy framework negotiations, such as for the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
